Holy cow, we had a good time. Picture a gym packed with high school students watching a back and forth game between us old folks and a bunch of seniors playing for pride and bragging rights. Sure, Ben broke his ankle coming down from a [made!] layup, but it’s all fun in the end. Especially when you win with a last second 3 point at the buzzer… ;)
This is one of those things we are loving about both being involved at the same school. Sure, I’m just a coach but since I also sub at EHS, a good amount of the kids know me and it’s such a cool thing to get to be a “united front” so to speak with Ben in our activities here. Teach together (like when I sub across the hall from him) or get to play basketball together? I don’t know if it gets any better than that!
But you should really read the account by EHS teacher Bruce Overstreet, effectively our team captain. Here’s a teaser to get you to click over to his full post on his blog, Second Wind.
The clock was winding down to 00:00 in the annual Everett High School Seniors versus Staff game as I received the basketball on the right wing from Byron Lewellen. With no other real ball-handlers on the court for the E.H.S. staff at that point and the score tied, the responsibility fell squarely on my shoulders to advance the ball and try to find a way to win this one for the reputation of the staff.
